What the Major Banks Are Recommending Right Now

Markets may be at all-time highs, but that does not mean every bank-backed stock is a buy. Alpesh Patel OBE reviews 25 top-tier ideas from the world’s biggest banks, using momentum, quality and valuation checks to separate potential opportunities from stocks where the brokers may be ahead of the chart.

All Time Highs

Well the crazy news is that we’re at all-time highs, which, of course, is a little bit like that parcel of land my uncle has in the north of England for the last 30 years.

He discovered that, instead of all the businesses he set up and built, if he just held on to the land, did nothing else, and then sold it 30 years later, that would have been the biggest success of all. The stock markets feel like that: there’s a lot of heat, not much light, but one thing’s clear: all-time highs are all-time highs and sitting back and enjoying the sunshine is the easiest hard money you’ll ever make.

I narrowly missed out on winning Finfluencer Awards Best Economist. However I did get to meet a representative from ShareScope so that was really nice. We should probably do a ShareScope x Alpesh Patel event at some point.

In this newsletter I’ll go through what the biggest banks are saying and, of course, my take. More importantly, a few of the charts from ShareScope as well

I also read that if the stock markets had four up years, which it looks like it will this year, then the fifth year is usually up as well. This is just getting ridiculous now.

Sadly people confuse price rises with valuation. They look at the numerator not the denominator in a ratio. That’s no great surprise and so they think, in general, by the way, the market must be overvalued. Parts of it always have been. But growth very much looks like the default state. Whilst we’re well aware that corrections of a 10% drop are normal as well, holding those two apparently diametrically opposed views at the same time is way beyond the human brain. Thankfully we now have AI.

What the World’s Biggest Banks Are Backing Right Now

A 25-stock top tier from seven global wealth-management banks — October 2026

THE METHOD — WHY THIS LIST EXISTS

Every month the world’s largest wealth-management banks publish their ratings, and every month most private investors ignore them. That is a mistake. UBS, Barclays, Citi, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley and Bank of America manage trillions for their private clients. When their analysts cluster around a stock, the money tends to follow. Each month I take the stocks these banks rate a buy and run every one through my own screen: the chart, the MACD, the quality metrics and live analyst sentiment. The banks do the discovery. We do the discipline.

A buy rating is a useful starting point, not a finishing line. Ratings change, banks are often wrong together, and a great business can still be at the wrong point in its momentum cycle. My job is to separate the stocks where the banks’ conviction, the fundamentals and the chart all agree from the ones where you would be buying an opinion on a falling chart.

This month I filtered more than 110 bank-rated stocks down to a top tier of 25, with a further 87 on the watchlist. The backdrop is a Federal Reserve that has started raising rates again, September inflation at 3.7%, oil near $100, a 10-year Treasury yield above 5%, and a sharp mid-October sell-off in AI stocks. Several of the 25 are textbook setups. Several others are quality businesses where the chart has not caught up with the brokers. Knowing which is which is what the full analysis provides.

The banks narrow the universe. The MACD tells you whether the money is moving with them right now. Use both — neither alone is sufficient.

OCTOBER 2026 — WHAT IS DRIVING THE LIST

Four macro facts cut across virtually every position this month. Understanding them first stops you reading individual situations in isolation.

  • Rates are rising again: The Federal Reserve raised its target range by a quarter point on 16 September 2026 to 3.75–4.00%, and the next meeting falls in the last week of October. The US 10-year Treasury yield touched 5.31% on 5 October, its highest level in 24 years, and closed the week of 16 October at 5.10%.
  • Inflation is back in the data: US consumer prices rose 0.6% in September and 3.7% over 12 months. Core inflation is calmer at 2.6%, but producer prices jumped 1.3% in the month, the largest monthly rise since March 2022.
  • Oil is near $100: Crude closed at $99.02 on 16 October, up more than 72% this year on geopolitical tensions, and US petrol averaged $4.33 a gallon.
  • The tape rotated in mid-October: The S&P 500 closed the week of 16 October at 7,659, down 1.95% on the week but still up 11.9% this year. The Nasdaq fell 4.5% and technology dropped 6.6% on AI valuation worries, while consumer staples, healthcare and energy led.
  • The banks are in good shape: Goldman Sachs’ third-quarter equities trading revenue rose 72%, JP Morgan’s 49%, and Citigroup reported its best third-quarter revenue in a decade. The US-China Busan trade truce has also been extended to 10 January 2027.

WHAT THE FRAMEWORK FOUND

Each top-tier stock receives one of three statuses under my framework: CONFIRMED where both MACD timeframes support the fundamentals, MIXED where the fundamentals qualify but the monthly MACD has not yet turned, and COMPROMISED where the monthly regime is bearish and capital preservation takes priority, whatever the brokers say. This month: 15 CONFIRMED, 9 MIXED and 1 COMPROMISED. The COMPROMISED name carries a bank buy rating and passes my quality screen, which is precisely why the framework exists.

INSURANCE, REINSURANCE & ASSET MANAGERS — 7 POSITIONS

Seven of the 25 top-tier names. Scores 7 to 9. Projections +19% to +27%. Most trade 30–65% below fair-value estimates. Three CONFIRMED, four MIXED.

This is the biggest single message from the banks this month. Insurers hold premiums before claims are paid, and with the 10-year Treasury yield above 5%, that float earns more than it has in two decades. One name in this group scores 9 out of 10 on my VGI quality screen, has both MACD timeframes rising, and has not had a sell rating in a year. Another has the biggest buy wall in the whole report, with six banks reiterating on the same day, yet its monthly MACD is still below signal.

AI HARDWARE, SEMICONDUCTORS & SOFTWARE — 4 POSITIONS

Scores 7 to 8. Projections +50% to +60%, the highest of any group. All four CONFIRMED on the monthly.

All four were caught in the mid-October AI sell-off, when the Nasdaq fell 4.5% in a week and technology dropped 6.6%. One fell almost 12% in that week alone, despite earnings forecast to grow at nearly 40% a year and 112 bank buy ratings in 12 months without a single sell. This is exactly the situation the framework is built for: a bullish monthly climate with bad weekly weather.

HEALTHCARE — 2 POSITIONS

Scores 8 to 9. Projections +21% to +28%. Both CONFIRMED.

When money left technology in mid-October, healthcare was one of the sectors it went to. These are the two most attractive risk-reward setups in the report. One is a VGI 9 with both MACD timeframes rising and six bank buy ratings in a single week. The other is a textbook recovery from a deep monthly washout, trading almost 68% below fair value with two broker upgrades in a fortnight.

INDUSTRIALS, ENERGY & MATERIALS — 7 POSITIONS

Scores 7 to 8. Projections +23% to +75%. Four CONFIRMED, two MIXED, one COMPROMISED.

The broadest group in the report, from solar wiring and gas pipelines to rail equipment, building systems and industrial gases. It holds the two highest projections in the top tier, both above 70%. It also holds the one COMPROMISED name this month: a quality business with a bank buy rating whose monthly and weekly MACD are now both falling.

CONSUMER & LATIN AMERICAN FINANCIALS — 5 POSITIONS

All five score 7. Projections +19% to +45%. Two CONFIRMED, three MIXED.

The most varied group in the report: two Brazilian financials, an Italian luxury house, a US car retailer and a household-name apparel brand. One Brazilian name has just turned its monthly MACD up from below zero, with four banks rating it a buy in the past month. The apparel brand collected seven buy ratings in a single day, yet its monthly MACD has slipped below signal. The brokers are ahead of the chart.

HOW TO USE SHARESCOPE ON THIS LIST

You do not need the full analysis to start working with this universe in ShareScope. Here is a simple starting workflow:

  • Pull up the monthly chart first — before reading any analyst note or fair-value estimate. In my framework the monthly is the climate and the weekly is the weather. When they conflict, the monthly wins.
  • Add MACD (12,26,9) on both timeframes: monthly above signal and rising means the climate supports the position. Monthly below signal and falling means capital preservation comes first, however many banks rate it a buy.
  • Run the quality check with the APSE Value/Growth filter — ROCE, earnings growth and cash conversion are your anchors. A stock that passes the chart test but fails the quality filter is a trade, not an investment.
  • Remember ratings move: bank analysts upgrade and downgrade constantly, and several names on this list changed rating in October alone. Verify the current chart and rating before acting on anything here.
  • Size to the status: CONFIRMED names can carry full position sizes. MIXED names deserve half-size or a staged entry. COMPROMISED names belong on the watchlist or at 1–2% of portfolio maximum. This is a risk-8+ list, so set your exit before you enter.
  • Double check and analyse for yourself always. Markets move fast and things can have moved significantly even by the time I finish writing this sentence.
The names on this list range from quality compounders backed by every major bank to businesses where the brokers are well ahead of the chart. The full analysis tells you which is which. The MACD and quality filter in ShareScope are your tools for staying on the right side of that distinction.
